-
- CD-Rs are too expensive to supplant the floppy drive - in drive cost more
- than media cost, of course.
-

-
- People will sacrifice the "something better" to come along to have a
- standard for a reasonable amount of time. There will always be
- "something better" - the question is where to stop.
-
- This is part of why I believe the Zip is going to be strong:
-
- Zips are already available from Iomega and Reveal.
- Epson is showing their own Zip drive (due: Feb '96)
- Both Fujitsu and Maxell are lined up with Zip drives.
-
- That's Iomega, Reveal, Epson, Fuji, and Maxell - ALL supplying Zip drives.
- You can't tell me that it won't bring the cost down to the level Amiga
- HDFD drives are selling for.
-
- Further, Iomega has closed a deal with one of the largest floppy
- manufacturers (MegaMedia) to produce Zip disks, and you should expect
- Iomega, Sony, Epson, Fuji, and Maxell to be offering 25 and 100MB Zip
- disks. ALL of this by Q3 1996.
-
- I see these as major clues as to what the industry will be doing this
- year. You may find 100MB Zip disks for $5 come Christmas time (to go with
- $100 drives).
-
- CD-R systems are just not going to be cost-competitive with these things
- in a few months, and they will have to be redesigned and price-enhanced
- to support the future: DVD.
-
- Iomega is not simply letting this Zip technology die a sheltered
- unlicensed death. They are actually *trying* to replace the floppy
- (compared to just providing yet another removable media standard, as
- others are doing).
